How does it feel? Acknowledging the Emotional Impact of Tube Feeding- new DVD other other resources available.
Parents and carers have reported that the decision making processes involved in changing from oral to tube feeding are not always clear to them and that the focus is on the practical and technical aspects. Some practitioners focus completely on the practical aspects and fail to give parents enough time, information and emotional support to come to terms with the loss of oral feeding. The emotional impact of changing to tube feeding is often neglected and that this leaves many parents and children/young people feeling hurt, upset and confused.
How does it feel? Acknowledging the Emotional Impact of Tube Feeding, a DVD resource, plus interviews with parents and other resources that explore this issue have been developed by the National Managed Clinical Network for Children with Exceptional Healthcare Needs, Dr Marit Boot (NMCN CEN Manager), Dr Patricia Jackson (NMCN CEN Lead Clinician), Claire Edwards (Training Consultant), and Juliet Rees (Freelance Film Maker).
50 parents and carers of children with multiple impairments on tube feeding, a young person previously on tube feeding, and a large number of professionals from across Scotland were involved in developing the project.
There are six parts detailed below with 10 reflective learning questions. The work has been supported by the NMCN CEN Education and Training working group.
